On November 20, at the embankment of the Kaban lake in Kazan, Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov and Tatarstan State Counsellor Mintimer Shaimiev took part in the unveiling of a monument to the famous Tatar religious figure and scholar Shigabutdin Mardzhani.
Minnikhanov congratulated the gathered on the holiday of Mawlid an-Nabi - the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed. “On this day we are unveiling a monument to the great son of the Tatar people, the theologian and philosopher Shigabutdin Mardzhani. He made a great contribution to the enlightenment of the Tatar people. I want to thank all those who participated in the implementation of this project,” Tatarstan President emphasized.
In his turn, Shaimiev added that Mardzhani is a world-famous figure and that his writings will be studied for a very long time. “Mardzhani is our pride, the wealth of our people. It is necessary to tell more about him, to acquaint people with all aspects of his multifaceted activities, contribution to history. This is especially important with the increased tourist flow to Kazan,” he noted.
The sculpture was installed as part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Shigabutdin Mardzhani’s birth. The monument is made of white marble under the project of the great Tatar sculptor Baki Urmanche. The statement of the theologian “The truth and the righteous path are above all” is engraved on the plates.
